Sports, mentorship, community blend at LAC

California State Prison, Los Angeles County (LAC) hosted a day of sports, mentorship, and community Friday, May 16.

Between the Lines and Fox Sports 1 (FS1) visited LAC Facility A at Lancaster to bring a special basketball event.

Among the guests were:

  • NFL legend Keshawn Johnson
  • 18-year NBA veteran Trevor Ariza
  • and three-time NBA champion and former Los Angeles Laker Danny Green.

Between the Lines is a non-profit organization founded in 2017 dedicated to reducing recidivism by providing mentorship, educational programming, and sports as a form of therapy and personal development. This marked the organization’s second visit to LAC.

The highlight of the day was a competitive basketball game between the Facility A team and Between the Lines players, with Green as a key contributor. The game was a rematch of their previous encounter, with Between the Lines narrowly edging out another win in a spirited and hard-fought battle.

The court was filled with energy as a live DJ kept the beats going and spirits high throughout the event. While the scoreboard reflected a win (64-62) for the visitors, the true victory was in the yard’s atmosphere of camaraderie, respect, and hope.

With notable figures like Johnson and Ariza showing their support and engaging with the incarcerated population as well as staff, the event is a reminder of the transformative power of human connection and the importance of second chances.

For those inside the prison walls, the game brought a moment of normalcy, encouragement, and inspiration, leaving a lasting impact.
