CMF memory care nurse supports patients in cognitive decline

In recognition of Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month, we spoke with Kathleen Salacup, supervising registered nurse II (SRN II) at California Medical Facility’s (CMF) Memory Care Unit (MCU).

We sat down to discuss her team and how they support patients living with memory challenges.

Q&A with Kathleen Salacup, SRNII with CMF MCU

What is the CMF Memory Care Unit and what is your role?

Registered Nurse II Kathleen Salacup oversees the CMF Memory Care Unit.

Opened in July 2023, the CMF Memory Care Unit in Vacaville is one of only two specialized memory units in the California prison system. The other is located at California Health Care Facility in Stockton.

The unit provides 24/7 care for incarcerated patients who are diagnosed with dementia or cognitive impairment that impact their daily activities such as eating, bathing, dressing, and toileting.

As an SRN II, I help oversee the daily clinical operations and delivery of patient care, as well as provide support, guidance, and training to our unit staff. To successfully support each patient, there is a high level of cohesive planning (among) registered nurses, licensed vocational nurses, certified nursing assistants, recreational therapists, mental health, social workers, primary care providers, and custody staff.

How do staff help patients stay engaged?

The MCU offers structured daily cognitive stimulation activities such as puzzles, music therapy groups, art, trivia, and outdoor activities to promote mental and social stimulation. The goal is to provide a multi-disciplinary approach to deliver optimum care and improve the quality of life of our patients. We also provide nursing-led therapy groups, where nurses follow a structured curriculum and discuss topics such as life skills, wellness, and substance use disorders.

What support systems are in place for patients with memory issues?

Each patient receives a personalized care plan developed by a multi-disciplinary team. Mental health services are available to assist patients with psychological concerns, anxiety, and behavioral changes related to cognitive decline.

For those with limited decision-making ability, the unit Medical Social Workers coordinate with family or legal guardians. Geriatric/palliative care MCU trained pastoral care workers also offer emotional and spiritual support.

Keeping your mind healthy

Looking after your brain health is an important part of overall wellness. Here are some suggestions to help keep your mind sharp from the National Institute on Aging:

  • Stay mentally active by learning new things and solving puzzles
  • Exercise regularly
  • Eat a brain-healthy diet (leafy greens, berries, fish)
  • Get enough sleep
  • Stay socially connected

This June, we honor the CMF MCU team and all staff who support patients with memory loss. The department encourages everyone to make brain health a priority.
