Steven Rakitnichan, a retired correctional sergeant from San Quentin, passed away July 19, 2025. He served the department for 28 years.

Rakitnichan began his career with the department in November 1976 as a correctional officer at San Quentin.
He promoted to sergeant in July 1987 at the Correctional Training Facility at Soledad, then transferred back to San Quentin after a year.
Rakitnichan retired from San Quentin in January 2004 after 28 years of service.
“He will be deeply missed by all who have had the privilege of knowing him. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time,” according to the institution.
A celebration of life will be held Saturday, Sept. 20, at 11 a.m. hours at Parent-Sorensen Mortuary and Crematory, 850 Keokuk St., Petaluma.
