California State Prison (CSP) Sacramento recently held a promotional ceremony to recognize and honor staff on their career achievements.
“Here at California State Prison, Sacramento, we had a promotional ceremony to recognize any promotions that took place, custody and non-custody within the last six months,” said Lt. B. Schroeder, the prison’s administrative assistant and public information officer.
The ceremony honored those promoted to chief deputy warden, sergeants, plumbers, personnel specialists, education and all classifications and ranks.
“So, I think it’s fantastic. You know, it’s the staff, in my opinion, (who) aren’t (usually) recognized for the hard work that they do daily. I think we need to put a spotlight on them,” said Warden J. Schultz.

CSP-Sacramento promotional ceremony builds camaraderie
A recently promoted sergeant said these types of staff recognition ceremonies are important.
“I was a correctional officer for approximately six years, and I recently promoted to a correctional sergeant,” said F. Navarro. “It was nice to get that recognition from one of our managers, our superiors, as well as having our family present so they can actually see firsthand (our) accomplishments for themselves.”
Another sergeant agreed.
“Most of the time, we don’t have our families see where we work because it’s an institution setting,” said Sgt. K. McKenna. “They don’t really see us in uniform other than going to or from work. So, it’s nice to have our custody staff in uniform, our non-custody staff dressed up, and recognized for their accomplishments. It meant everything.”
Schroeder, the prison’s administrative assistant and public information officer, said they plan to hold future ceremonies.
“We’re looking to do (these) every six months for any promotions we do have. (We are) looking forward to the next one,” he said. “It makes everyone feel good. It brings a lot of camaraderie and togetherness for our custody and our non-custody staff to know that we’re all here together and we support one another.”
