Antón Irvin finds his Second Chance

Antón Irvin, formerly incarcerated, found his Second Chance through the Re-Emerging Scholars Program at Sacramento City College.

While on the inside, Irvin gained introspection through the provided self-help programs, shifting his focus towards bettering himself.

Irvin was told he needed to participate in STOP (Specialized Treatment for Optimized Programming) following his release.

Freedom Through Education, a STOP organization in Sacramento, provided Antón with the resources needed to set himself up for success. From housing to counseling/treatment to job training, Freedom Through Education ensured Irvin was provided the tools needed for a successful community re-entry.

Reflecting on his experience with STOP, Irvin said it’s important to surround yourself with those looking to change.

“To be amongst a group of men still searching for betterment for their self, (is crucial),” he said. “You come into a forum where these things are offered, it was very helpful.”

Following his release, Irvin connected with a counselor who led him down the path to joining the Re-Emerging Scholars program at Sacramento City College.

The Re-Emerging Scholars program provides support for system impacted and formerly incarcerated individuals, looking to further their education.

“I have learned that second chances are possible. That’s why I am here, because I want to help people get that second chance too,” Irvin said.
