California State Prison-Sacramento is mourning the passing of Cory Martincek, a correctional captain who has been with the department for nearly 30 years. Martincek passed away April 16, 2026. Services will be held May 23 in Roseville.

Martincek began his career with the department as a cadet in September 1996. After graduating the Basic Correctional Officer Academy, he then reported to Pelican Bay State Prison in October 1996.
Later in February 1997, Martinceck transferred to Folsom State Prison. He then promoted to sergeant at California State Prison, Sacramento, in June 2007 and then to lieutenant in July 2012.
In May 2020, he promoted to captain at California Health Care Facility in Stockton. He recently returned to CSP-Sacramento in October 2025.
“Throughout his career, Capt. Martincek was more than a dedicated professional, he was someone people gravitated toward. He had a rare ability to bring humor into even the most difficult situations. No matter the circumstances, Cory could make people laugh, ease tension, and remind those around him that we’re all in this together,” the institution said. “This quality made him an exceptional leader and someone who was deeply respected and genuinely beloved by staff at every level. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and all those who had the privilege of knowing him.”
Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, May 23, at Bayside Church Adventure Campus, 6401 Stanford Ranch Road, Roseville.
