Rescue dogs graduate WSP‑RC training program

Five rescue dogs graduated a training program at WSP-RC.

A partnership between Wasco State Prison-Reception Center (WSP-RC) and PAW Estate Rescue & Shelter reached a milestone April 21 as five rescue dogs officially graduated from a training program.

The incarcerated population also donated $11,400 to the organization.

The graduation marks the completion of an intensive six-week basic obedience course. During the program, the dogs lived and worked side-by-side with their incarcerated trainers. These four-legged graduates come from varied backgrounds. While some were owner surrenders or strays, others were rescued directly from the streets.

Bridging gaps

The program’s primary objective is to bridge the gap between rescue and adoption, giving these four-legged friends a new “leash” in life. By providing consistent structure and basic obedience training, the program ensures these dogs transition from vulnerable rescues to well-behaved companions ready for their forever homes.

“This program is a win-win for everyone involved,” said an incarcerated trainer. “It provides the dogs with skills they need to be successful in a home environment, while offering those of us doing time in state prison a chance to practice patience, responsibility, and compassion. These skills will help us successfully reintegrate back into society once we are released.”

Some WSP-RC staff were given a chance to adopt the graduates before they were made available to others. After the graduation, the incarcerated population presented a check to the PAW Estate Rescue & Shelter.

The funds were raised thanks to an incarcerated person food sale. The fundraising sale was approved by acting Warden A. Williams and organized by the Community Resources Manager’s office.
