Ralph Torres, a retired correctional counselor II, passed away May 16, 2026, at the age of 76.

He dedicated more than 35 years of service to the department, retiring from the Correctional Training Facility (CTF) in 2010.
He began his career with the department in December 1974 as a correctional officer at CTF-Soledad. Torres steadily advanced through the ranks, promoting to correctional program supervisor in August 1979, sergeant in September 1982, correctional counselor in May 1984, and correctional counselor II supervisor in September 1989.
Following a distinguished career, Torres retired on June 30, 2006. His commitment to public service and the institution continued after retirement when he returned to CTF in October 2007. He served as a retired annuitant correctional counselor II supervisor until his final separation from state service in March 2010.

Throughout his career, Torres was known as a dedicated professional who genuinely cared about the people around him. Staff who worked alongside him (say he was) approachable, knowledgeable, compassionate, and always willing to help. His calm demeanor, wisdom, and sense of humor made him a respected mentor and trusted colleague to many.
His positive influence extended across generations of staff, and the relationships he built throughout his career left a lasting impact on the institution. Outside of his career, Ralph was deeply devoted to his family, his faith, and the simple joys in life. He was a lifelong lover of blues music and had a fascination with science fiction and the mysteries of the universe.
Faith guided his life and was reflected in the kindness, compassion, and support he provided to others. Above all, Ralph was devoted to his family. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. His legacy of service, faith and dedication will not be forgotten.
CTF extends its heartfelt condolences to his wife, children, grandchildren, extended family, friends, and all those whose lives were touched by his remarkable example. Please keep the Torres family and loved ones in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
