LAC acting Fire Captain Diaz honored for saving child’s life

LAC acting fire captain Diaz was honored after saving a child's life while attending his daughter's cheerleading event.

California State Prison-Los Angeles County (LAC) acting Fire Captain Jose Diaz was honored during a recent ceremony after saving a child’s life.

On May 1, the City of Lancaster hosted Antelope Valley Law Day.

Established over 15 years ago, the event honors local law enforcement and legal workers who keep the Antelope Valley safe.

Diaz was recognized for heroic actions he took Saturday, March 14. While attending a cheerleading event with his daughter, Diaz discovered a young child unresponsive in a swimming pool.

Without hesitation, he retrieved the child from the water and directed a bystander to call 911. Drawing on his training as a first responder, he quickly initiated CPR. Thanks to his swift response and life-saving measures, the child began breathing again before emergency medical services arrived.

As a direct result of Diaz’s intervention, the child survived and was able to return home from the hospital three days later.
