California Institution for Men (CIM) at Chino recently held an interfacility basketball tournament, demonstrating rehabilitation through sports.
“The groups that we’re taking right now is all about recovery and gaining tools,” said a fan sitting courtside. “When we’re going through situations in life and on the court, it helps us go through them.”

Teams from three different yards, Facility A, B and C, competed to see whose team would take this year’s Golden Ball.
The Interfacility Basketball League was established in 2024 by Coach Brian Horan. His goal was to set up an exciting and competitive league to promote teamwork in each facility.
“A lot of these guys are going to have to compete in the world when they get out,” Horan said.

Sports in a prison setting is one more tool in the rehabilitation toolkit.
“Sports is a way to foster a competitive spirit that will help them after they leave CIM,” he said.
Organizers congratulated the facilities for each extremely entertaining and competitive game. Each yard won a game, but it was ultimately Facility C who outscored the rest.
“Congrats to Facility C, and we’ll see next year if you can defend the title,” organizers said.
