Bane, at California State Prison (CSP) Solano, and Ebony, at North Kern State Prison, are two CDCR K-9s working to find contraband and maintain public safety.
Every day, CDCR K-9s work alongside their handlers to help keep the institutions, staff and the public safe. From locating contraband to assisting with criminal investigations, these highly trained officers play an important role in maintaining safety across California’s institutions.
CDCR recognizes the dedication, loyalty and service of our K-9 partners. This is the third in a series highlighting CDCR’s K-9s and their handlers.

Bane: CSP-Solano
- Handler’s name: Correctional Officer Jimmy Chastain
- Breed: Belgian Malinoi
- Age: 5
- Institution: California State Prison (CSP) Solano, Vacaville
- Years of service: 4
- If your K-9 had a theme song, it would be: “You know how we do it” by Ice Cube
- How they like to relax when they’re not working: After a hard day at work, Bane enjoys well-deserved nap on the couch.
- Big discovery: Bane found 239.9 grams of concentrated cannabis (wax) and 236 grams of methamphetamine Aug. 10. They were in 16 bindles, hidden inside a mattress. Prison value: $65,000. Total drugs: 475.9 grams.
- Memorable moment: Bane uncovered an incarcerated-person manufactured safe May 15 hidden behind a loose cinder block in a dorm. Multiple cellphones were discovered in the safe.
Ebony: Pleasant Valley State Prison
- Handler’s name: Correctional Officer Mesa
- Breed: Labrador Retriever
- Age: 2
- Institution: North Kern State Prison, Delano
- Breed: Belgian Malinois
- Years of Service: 10 months
- If your K-9 had a theme song it would be: “Best Day of My Life” by American Authors because she is always happy and enjoying life.
- How they like to relax when they’re not working: She is happy and energetic. She likes to people watch when she is relaxing.
- Fun fact: Ebony snorts when she is excited.
