On Sept. 4, 42 new parole agents ceremoniously joined the ranks of CDCR’s Division of Adult Parole Operations (DAPO) during a graduation event at the Richard A. McGee Correctional Training Center in Galt (The Academy).
The agents underwent 13 weeks of rigorous training and will serve in communities across the state.
“Parole agents have the opportunity to influence outcomes every day,” CDCR Undersecretary of Operations Jason Johnson said. “The job requires them to recognize when intervention and support can prevent a setback from becoming another crime or creating another victim.
To attend the academy, candidates must complete the hiring process by applying to take the Parole Agent I exam or gaining eligibility through the transfer process by meeting the minimum qualifications.
Eligible candidates apply for open positions listed on the CalCareers website and interviews are held for the most qualified applicants.
“Accountability and rehabilitation are not competing responsibilities – they are equally essential to public safety,” Johnson added. “Sometimes the job requires enforcement, other times it will require connecting someone to reentry resources.
“Often, the job requires both. How parole agents do the job not only impacts the individual standing in front of them, but the community and public safety.”
