CIW, CIM wardens throw ceremonial first pitches

Before a packed crowd at Ontario’s ONT Field, wardens from two institutions threw out the ceremonial first pitches.

California Institution for Men (CIM) Warden Eric Mejia and California Institution for Women (CIW) Warden Sonia Padilla threw ceremonial first pitches prior to an Ontario Tower Buzzers Single-A minor league baseball game.

Both wardens were joined by former Los Angeles Dodger catcher and Los Angeles Angels World Series Champion Manager Mike Scioscia.

The event highlighted the importance of strengthening relationships between prisons and the communities they serve. It was also an opportunity to promote positive community engagement, emphasizing the shared responsibility of building safe, connected communities.

“Participating in this type of event is a great reminder that CIW and CIM are part of a larger community in Chino and Ontario,” Warden Padilla said. “We have an opportunity to build relationships, create understanding and work together toward a safer and stronger community for everyone.”

Through events his these, prison leaders are seeking to strengthen partnerships with local organizations, businesses, community leaders and residents.

Community engagement provides opportunities for correctional staff to meet residents in a positive environment and develop partnerships. It also demonstrates the professionalism and commitment of the men and women who work inside the prison.

The baseball game offered a fitting setting for this message as CIM and CIW staff filled seats near first base.

“Baseball has always been something that brings people together,” Warden Mejia added. “Tonight was a great opportunity to highlight our staff and show our community we are committed to being a positive partner.”

The event also highlighted the CIM and CIW Honor Guard as they presented the flags prior to the start of the game.

For local residents, seeing the wardens take the mound offered a different perspective on the people who work within correctional institutions. Both wardens got a special treat when they were joined by former Los Angeles Dodger catcher and Los Angeles Angels World Series Champion Manager Mike Scioscia.
