DJJ Video Visiting with Microsoft Teams

In-person visitation has resumed. For information for scheduling an in-person visit, go to this visitation guidelines site. Video visiting using Microsoft Teams (formerly Skype for Business) is available at all Division of Juvenile Justice facilities. (En Espanol)

If you are an approved visitor, you must send an email to the respective email address that your loved one is located to facilitate a video visit. They are as listed below:

In your email, you must include the following:

  • Family member’s name and relationship to youth
  • Email address & phone number
  • The Youth’s first and last name
  • DJJ number and living unit, if known

If you have any questions, please talk to your Parole Agent, Casework Specialist, or Senior Youth Correctional Counselor.

The DJJ representative will schedule a “Microsoft Teams” meeting and email it to your email address on record. You will need to utilize “Microsoft Teams” in order to participate in the video visit.

Please send request by Wednesday for the upcoming weekend to allow time to contact and schedule

***Please note that Video visits may be limited on one youth per weekend to allow all youth an opportunity for a visit.

If family member has NOT been approved to visit: You will need to fill out a Visiting Request Form, and go through the process for getting a visitor approved.  Once approved, have the family member follow the instructions above to request a video visit.

  • Ensure your device is fully updated and you have the latest version of the Microsoft Teams app.
  • You do not need a Microsoft Teams  account to join the meeting.
  • We highly recommend that you install Microsoft Teams app on your smartphone (iPhone or Android) or iPad prior to your actual video visit to maximize your time with your loved one.
  • Do not join the meeting until the specified time. Joining early can causes issues.
  • If you have an iPhone and cannot find the meeting notice email, check your calendar on your iPhone, it may have automatically accepted the meeting and added it to your calendar.

If you plan on participating in the video visit via Smartphone or tablet, you must first download and install the app. Go to Step #1.

If you are participating via computer/laptop, we recommend that you join via web browser. Go to Step #7.

Connecting via iPhone or iPad

Clicking on the link in the invite from your smartphone or tablet will bring you to the App Store for installation.

  1. When installing the app or software, you must ensure you are installing “Microsoft Teams” not “Skype”.  We do not use Skype anymore.
  2. At the scheduled video visit time, open the meeting invitation and click on the “Click here to join the meeting” link.
  3. Once “Microsoft Teams” opens the link, you will be prompted to Sign In. Do not click on “Sign In and join” click on “Join as a Guest” per the screenshot below.

  1. You must enter your name. Please enter your name as it’s on record with DJJ and then click on “Join meeting”. The DJJ Representative will ensure that only “authorized” participants will be on the call.

  1. To enable audio, touch or click on the icon shaped like a microphone.

  1. At the conclusion of your call, touch the red icon to hang up.

Connecting via Android

Clicking on the link in the invite from your smartphone or tablet will bring you to the Google Play Store for installation.

  1. At the scheduled video visit time, open the meeting invitation and click on the “Click here to join the meeting” Microsoft Teams link.

2. If you already have the app installed on your phone, click on Join Meeting and start again at step #4.  If not, click on ‘Get Teams’.  This link will bring you to the Google Play Store.

3. Click on ‘Install’.  Once the install is complete, click on ‘Open’ and then click on ‘Join Meeting’.

4. Type in your full First Name and Last Name as it is on record with DJJ.  Once you have that entered, click on Join Meeting.

5. Select ‘Allow’ to the prompt “Allow Teams to record audio?”

  1. Once connected, you will be prompted that you have joined in as an Attendee and that you are waiting in the lobby.  The DJJ Representative will ensure that only “authorized” participants will be on the call and admit you at that time.

  1. Once you have been admitted, you can tap on your device’s screen and click on the video icon to start to share your video.

  1.   If this is your first time sharing your video through the Microsoft Teams app, you will need to provide permissions:

9. At the conclusion of your call, tap your device’s screen and touch the red icon to hang up.

Connecting via a computer/laptop web browser – Windows Platform

  1. Open the meeting invite from the web browser on your computer/laptop.  Click on the link ‘Click here to join the meeting’.

2. Click on ‘Continue on this browser – No download or installation required’

3. When the new screen loads, enter in your First Name and Last Name of which you have on record with DJJ.  At this screen you can enable your microphone and your video camera.  In the black area will show you what they will see when you connect.  Once you are ready, click ‘Join Now’.

5. Once you are done with the call, click on the red icon to leave the session

*** CDCR/DJJ will not offer any technical support if you experience any technical issues.  It is your responsibility to have “Microsoft Teams” installed on a functional smartphone, tablet, and laptop/computer with internet access and a camera.
