LANCASTER – California State Prison, Los Angeles County (LAC) is investigating an inmate attack that severely injured a correctional officer.
At 2:07 p.m. Monday, Nov. 20, during the afternoon yard and shift change, inmate Sharvon Fredrick, 32, rushed a control booth officer outside Facility D and punched him in the face, knocking the officer unconscious. After the officer fell to the ground, Fredrick stomped on the officer’s face.
The yard alarm was activated and the building control officer fired a direct impact round that struck Fredrick and stopped his attack on the officer. Responding staff used physical force to bring Fredrick to the ground as he continued to resist their efforts to quell the incident.
The injured officer was immediately transported to an outside medical facility. He sustained a fractured orbital bone and severe bruising/swelling. His injuries are not life-threatening, though he is still in recovery.
Fredrick was evaluated by prison medical staff and treated for scratches, bruises and small cuts. Inmate movement at LAC is limited while the Investigative Services Unit investigates the attack.
Fredrick was received from Los Angeles County Sept. 21, 2001, and is serving a life sentence with the possibility of parole for rape and use of a firearm during a sex crime.
Fredrick was transferred to California State Prison, Corcoran after the attack. He is being housed in the prison’s Administrative Segregation Unit.
LAC provides long-term housing for male inmates classified as minimum-, medium- and maximum-security. LAC opened in 1993, houses approximately 3,400 inmates and employs more than 1,800 people.
