FOLSOM – California State Prison, Sacramento (SAC) officials are investigating the death of an inmate as a homicide.
At around 2:15 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 10, inmate Devlin Stringfellow, 48, was attacked by two inmates on the Facility B main exercise yard. Staff immediately responded and the inmates stopped the attack as staff approached. Two inmate-manufactured weapons were recovered from the scene.
Medical staff responded and took Stringfellow to the institution clinic, where he was pronounced dead at 2:50 p.m.
Jacob Kober, 29, and Stephen Dunckhurst, 49 have been identified as the suspects. They have been placed in SAC’s Administrative Segregation Unit as the incident is investigated. The Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office is assisting in the investigation. The Office of the Inspector General was notified.
Kober was received into California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) custody on April 28, 2015, from Alameda County to serve 80 years to life with the possibility of parole for first-degree murder. Dunckhurst was received into CDCR custody on Oct. 25, 2005, from Shasta County to serve three years for second-degree robbery, and was also convicted in 2010 and sentenced to 33 years to life for vehicle theft and possession/manufacture of a deadly weapon by a prisoner.
Stringfellow was received into California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) custody from Los Angeles County on Feb. 12, 2014, to serve a six-year sentence for possession of a controlled substance for sale, carrying a concealed dirk or dagger, and assault with force likely to produce great bodily injury. He was scheduled to be released in June 2020.
Activated in 1986, California State Prison, Sacramento is a maximum-security prison that houses approximately 2,100 general population inmates and employs about 1,700 people. The institution houses long-term inmates, inmates requiring specialized mental health programming, and inmates with high risk medical concerns.
