LANCASTER ― California State Prison-Los Angeles County (LAC) officials are investigating the death of inmate Myles S. Asuega as a homicide.
On April 2 at 5:18 p.m., correctional officers found Asuega unresponsive in his cell. Custody and medical staff performed life-saving measures but Asuega was pronounced deceased at 5:52 p.m. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner will conduct an autopsy and determine his cause of death.
Asuega, 33, was admitted from San Bernardino County on Sept. 10, 2009, to serve 18 years for attempted second-degree murder with an enhancement for committing a street gang act in the commission of a violent felony, second-degree robbery, and resisting/deterring an officer with threats/violence.
Asuega’s cellmate, Roberto Kaimimoku, has been identified as the suspect and was re-housed in the Administrative Segregation Unit pending the investigation. Kaimimoku, 33, was admitted from San Diego County on Oct. 7, 2008, to serve a 20-year sentence for attempted second-degree murder with enhancements for committing a street gang act in the commission of a violent felony and being armed with a firearm. Kaimimoku was also sentenced in Kings County on Oct. 23, 2013, to serve a two-year sentence for assault by a prisoner with a deadly weapon or force likely to produce great bodily injury, an in-prison offense.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is investigating this incident. LAC’s Investigative Services Unit is assisting and the Office of the Inspector General has been notified.
LAC in Lancaster houses approximately 2,665 minimum- and maximum-security inmates, serves as a medical hub for enhanced outpatient levels of health care, and provides reentry programs including commercial plumbing, painting and masonry and computer literacy. LAC employs approximately 3,500 people.
