Hello families please be aware that at Avenal State Prison (ASP) and CDCR to encourage incarcerated persons visits as a means to establish and maintain meaningful family and community relationships. ASP makes every effort to attempt to be as accommodating as possible in keeping with the need to maintain order, the safety of persons, and the security of the prison. ALLOWABLE VISITOR ITEMS
Visitors are limited in items that may be brought into the prison. Items allowed without prior approval are limited to:
- 100$ limit per adult and 50 $ limit per child. Only quarters or dollar coins will be allowed into the institution. There are change machines located in the visitor processing center for visitors to utilize. These machines only accept $1, $5, $10, and $20 dollar bills. Any bills larger than a $20 will not be accepted.
- A small transparent bag (generally 6 in. by 8 in) larger bags may be allowed for visitors with minor children.
- Two keys on a ring with no other attachments. One key may be an electronic key fob.
- Government issued identification card. May be either Driver License, Identification Card, Passport, or consulate identification card.
- A comb or brush, non-metallic, no pointed ends or detachable parts.
- A small unopened pack of tissues or a handkerchief; no bandannas.
- A pair of Prescription glasses.
- Ten photographs, no larger than 8″ by 10″. Photos may be shown to the incarcerated person but must be taken out by the visitor at the end of the visit. Photos cannot be Polaroid and will be viewed by staff during processing to ensure they are appropriate.
- Documents up to 10 pages, no larger than 8 1/2 ” by 11″ (standard typing paper). Documents will be viewed by staff during processing to ensure appropriateness. All documents that enter the visiting room must be taken out by the visitor at the end of the visit.
- Visitors who are bringing an infant or a toddler may bring any of the following baby items.
* A combination of six facotry-sealed single serving packets of baby formula or four transparent plastic baby bottles or cups that are empty or contain premixed formula, milk, almond milk, soy milk, rice milk, lactose-free milk, juice, or water; a breast pump and associated supplies; and refrigerated or frozen breastmilk.
* Six non glass containers of baby food or snacks in sealed packaging.
* Two plastic spoons.
* Ten (10) disposable diapers.
* One Sealed package of baby wipes.
* Three changes of clothing.
* Two small blankets (single ply).
* Two pacifiers.
* Three burp cloths.
* Diaper cream.
* A baby carrier or wrap.
* A clear plastic diaper bag.
ATTIRE RESTRICTIONS
Visitors attire restriction are as follows:
Prohibited Attire: Consists of but is not limited to the following:
- Clothing that resembles state-issued clothing worn by the incarcerated population (blue denim or blue chambray shirts and blue denim pants).
- Clothing or garments that:
* Expose the breast/chest area, genitals, or buttocks. Or by design, the manner worn, or due to the absence of, excessively allows the anatomical detail fo body parts or midriff to be clearly viewed.
* Are sheer, transparent, or excessively tight.
* Espose more than two inches above the knee, including slits when standing. - Strapless or spaghetti strap tops.
- Shower shoes and house slippers.
- Sleeveless dresses or tops that expose undergarments.
- Clothing or accessories displaying obscene or offensive language, drawings, or objects
No metal steel toe boots.

Visitation Information
Avenal State Prison currently offers All-day visiting (see below for hours). You must schedule utilizing the (VSA) at https://cdcr.gtlvisitme.com/app scheduling application. Requests sent via email will not be reviewed. The request period begins eight days before the visitation day and closes five days before the visitation day.
In order to accurately receive and provide direct feedback of your concern(s), Visitors who wish to discuss immediate visiting-related issues are encouraged to seek the visiting Sergeant or Lieutenant before, during, or at the completion of their visit for a resolution. Visitors may also be scheduled an interview at the earliest opportunity.

Access to Institution Affected
CDCR urges those traveling to our institutions to plan ahead for a safe trip. Before heading to an institution for an in-person visit, download the QuickMap app or visit https://quickmap.dot.ca.gov/ for up-to-the-minute information on road conditions, traffic, closures, chain control, and more.
If an institution must cancel visiting due to conditions such as weather, those with an appointment will receive a notice through the Visitation Scheduling Application (VSA). If you plan on participating in a walk-in visit, please contact the institution beforehand.
Visitors/Loved ones arriving for in-person visiting may arrive on Institutional grounds 30 mins prior to the processing time.
**As a reminder, a certified copy of each minor’s birth certificate must be brought with an adult visitor accompanying a minor (18 years or younger) at all times, regardless of whether the child has previously visited ASP. Visitors will only be permitted in if they have a birth certificate.**

Walk-in Visitation Instructions
Friday: 2:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. (Processing ends at 5:00 p.m.)
Saturday, Sundays and Designated Holidays: 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. (Processing ends at 2:00 p.m.)
Due to shift change at the institution, the processing of visitors will be ceased from 1:15pm to 2:00 pm (Visitors processed at 2pm will be allowed in at 2:15pm) during weekend in-person visiting days.
Overnight Family Visiting
By appointments only.
Family Visiting days: Tuesday through Thursday and Friday through Sunday.
Minors must be an immediate family member and accompanied by an adult who is an approved immediate family member and must have a current notarized written approval from a parent and/or legal guardian if the accompanying adult is not the minor’s parent or legal guardian. The notarized note must indicate that the visit is a family overnight visit. If required documentation is not provided, your family visit is subject to cancellation.
