Task Statements:

1.  Performs oral evaluations of inmate patients to provide a course of treatment, utilizing professional knowledge and comprehensive dental skills, authorized by the Department Operations Manual (DOM), Title 15, Dental Practice Act, etc. and the Chief Dentist, CF.

2.  Performs periodontics dentistry (e.g., oral hygiene instruction, scaling, prophylaxes, etc.) to provide comprehensive dental care to diagnose, prevent, treat, and control periodontal disease that presents a threat to the health and well being of inmate patients utilizing appropriate instrumentation, professional knowledge, and comprehensive dental skills authorized by the Departmental Operations Manual (DOM), Title 15, etc. and the Chief Dentist, CF.

3.  Performs oral surgery to treat dental pathology that presents a threat to the health and well being of inmate patients, utilizing appropriate instrumentation, professional knowledge and comprehensive dental skills authorized by the Departmental Operations Manual (DOM), Title 15, etc. and the Chief Dentist, CF.

4.  Performs oral radiology to diagnose dental pathology that presents a threat to the health and well being of inmate patients, utilizing the dental radiographs, professional knowledge and comprehensive dental skills authorized by the State of California Dental Radiologic License, Departmental Operations Manual (DOM), Title 15, etc. and the Chief Dentist, CF.

5.  Performs operative dentistry to correct dental pathology and/or conditions of the oral cavity (masticatory apparatus) that presents a threat to the health and well being of inmate patients utilizing appropriate instrumentation, materials, professional knowledge and comprehensive dental skills authorized by the Departmental Operations Manual (DOM), Title 15, etc. and the Chief Dentist, CF.

6.  Performs prosthetic dentistry (e.g., removable partials, full dentures, etc.) to restore masticatory function to maintain overall health and well being of inmate patients utilizing appropriate instrumentation, materials, professional knowledge and comprehensive dental skills authorized by the Departmental Operations Manual (DOM), Title 15, etc. and the Chief Dentist, CF.

7.  Performs endodontics (e.g., root canals, etc.) to maintain the integrity of the dentition and the overall health and well being of inmate patients utilizing appropriate instrumentation, materials, professional knowledge and comprehensive dental skills authorized by the Departmental Operations Manual (DOM), Title 15, etc. and the Chief Dentist, CF.

8.  Provides clinical direction to dental assistants to ensure optimum performance of chair-side procedures, infection control, radiographs, and other critical support functions (e.g., maintaining equipment, inventory, record management, etc.) utilizing professional knowledge and interpersonal communication skills, etc. authorized by the Departmental Operations Manual (DOM), Title 15, Dental Practice Act, etc. and the Chief Dentist, CF.

9.  Documents treatment in the inmate patients dental record to provide a record of inmate patient care in accordance with the Dental Practice Act, departmental policies and procedures, Departmental Operations Manual (DOM), Title 15, etc. and the Chief Dentist, CF.

10.  Prepares various written documents (e.g., records [tool and needle control, dental statistics, etc.], other reports, forms, logs [spore tests, etc.], correspondence [inmate requests, lab slips, etc.], etc.) to provide information, direction to others, and to ensure compliance with various laws, rules, regulations, departmental policies, procedures, etc. utilizing various resources.

11.  Supervises dental assistants in the performance of their daily duties to provide efficient and coordinated inmate patient care utilizing supervisory skills, professional knowledge, etc. in accordance with Departmental Operations Manual (DOM), and departmental policies and procedures.

12.  Serves on various committees, task forces, and work groups dealing with health care issues at a local and/or divisional level as directed by the Health Care Manager to provide subject matter expertise.

13.  Attends various training courses (e.g., orientation, staff meetings, in-service training and on-the-job training, etc.) to comply with institutional policies and procedures.

14.  Inspects premises for health and safety concerns in accordance with CAL OSHA, Departmental Operations Manual (DOM), departmental policies and procedures, and Dental Practice Act, etc.

15.  Schedules daily patient appointments, triage, inmate patients’ requests for care (CDC 7362), etc. to provide comprehensive dental care to diagnose, prevent, treat, control and correct dental conditions that present a threat to the health and well being of inmates in accordance with Departmental Operations Manual (DOM), and departmental policies and procedures.

16.  Maintains security of working areas and work materials/instruments to promote a safe and secure working environment utilizing tool control procedures, etc. in accordance with the Departmental Operations Manual (DOM), and departmental policies and procedures.

17.  Prevents escapes of and/or injury by persons committed to the Department of Corrections to themselves or others or to the destruction of property through personal observation to promote a safe and secure environment, in accordance with Departmental Operations Manual (DOM), and departmental policies and procedures.

18.  Provides coverage in dental emergency situations (sick calls) to provide comprehensive dental care to diagnose, prevent, treat, control and correct dental conditions that present a threat to the health and well being of inmate patients in accordance with Departmental Operations Manual (DOM), and departmental policies and procedures.

19.  Oversees infection control policies and procedures (e.g., personal protective equipment, etc.) instrument sterilization, surface disinfection, barrier protectors, etc. to promote a clean and safe environment for the health and well being of inmate patients and staff in accordance with CAL OSHA, laws, rules, regulations, Code of Safe Practices, Departmental Operations Manual (DOM), and departmental policies and procedures.

20.  Enhances and maintains professional skills through continuing education as required by the Board of Dental Examiners to stay abreast of advances in modern dentistry.

21.  Coordinates the maintenance (i.e., repair, cleaning and upkeep) of various dental equipment (e.g., electrical, plumbing, etc.) with the Chief Dentist to facilitate the ongoing, uninterrupted delivery of dental care utilizing personal observations and professional knowledge, etc.

22.  Communicates in a professional manner and deals with confidential, sensitive, and multidisciplinary issues utilizing tact, interpersonal skills, etc., to establish and maintain effective working relationships with health care and custody staff in order to determine and resolve custody/health care issues.

23.  Maintains a work environment free of discrimination and harassment, utilizing various resources (e.g., training, laws, rules, regulations, policies, procedures, etc.) on a daily basis.

24.  Prescribes and dispenses medications to inmate patients to alleviate pain and infection, etc. in accordance with a valid California dental license utilizing professional knowledge and judgment.

Special Personal Requirements:
