Task Statements:

1.  Operate passenger vehicles, trucks, small-wheeled tractors and similar motor equipment for institutions to haul materials and supplies utilizing driving ability, laws/rules/regulations, codes, policies/procedures, etc. on a daily basis.

2.  Service passenger vehicles, trucks, small-wheeled tractors and similar motor equipment to ensure state owned-vehicles are maintained for safety and reliability utilizing mechanic tools, service maintenance knowledge, manuals, policies/procedures, etc. on a daily basis.

3.  Wash passenger vehicles, trucks, small-wheeled tractors and other automotive equipment for the institutions to ensure the cleanliness and increase life expectancy of equipment utilizing tools and supplies, manuals, policies/procedures, etc. as needed.

4.  Maintain the interior and exterior of passenger vehicles, trucks, small-wheeled tractors and other automotive equipment for institutions to ensure the cleanliness and increase life expectancy of equipment utilizing tools and supplies, manuals, policies/procedures, etc. as needed.

5.  Make minor adjustments to passenger vehicles, trucks, small-wheeled tractors and other automotive equipment to ensure safe operation and compliance with laws/rules/regulations, codes, etc. utilizing manufacturer specification guidelines, tools, mechanical ability, professional experience, etc. as needed

6.  Repair passenger vehicles, trucks, small-wheeled tractors and other automotive equipment for institutions to ensure safe operation and compliance with laws/rules/regulations, codes, etc. utilizing manufacturer specification guidelines, tools, mechanical ability, etc. as needed.

7.  Fuel state-owned passenger vehicles, trucks, small-wheeled tractors and other automotive equipment’s tanks with appropriate gasoline, diesel, compressed natural gas, and/or propane, etc. to maintain vehicles for use in transporting supplies, hauling materials, and other official state business as needed.

8.  Transport materials, supplies, passengers (e.g., furniture, paper, laundry, inmates working in the shop, etc.) to and from various locations to ensure items/passengers reach the destination safely and timely by utilizing safe driving practices and adhering to laws/rules/regulations, guidelines, policies/procedures, etc. on a daily basis.

9.  Provide delivery of services (e.g. laundry, food, furniture, etc.) to institutions utilizing vehicles, tools, laws rules/regulations, policies/procedures, etc. as needed.

10.  Perform manual labor on passenger vehicles, trucks, small-wheeled tractors and other automotive equipment for institutions utilizing knowledge, experience, mechanical ability, tools, etc. as needed.

11.  Maintain travel logs (mileage charts, time clocks, fuel reports, etc.) to ensure compliance with policies, procedures, laws/rules/regulations utilizing standard forms/ formats, operational procedures, computers, etc. on a daily basis.

12.  Maintain time/schedule logs of start, finish and time spent doing activities to ensure compliance with policies, procedures, laws, rules, regulations, utilizing standard forms, formats, operational procedures, computer, etc. on a daily basis.

13.  Requisition supplies and repair parts for passenger vehicles, trucks, small-wheeled tractors and other automotive equipment utilizing the internet, personal knowledge, vendor quotes, etc.) pas needed.

14.  Attend training and/or safety meetings, personal and/or job related objectives to enhance knowledge of job related functions and/or meet departmental and/or State mandated requirements [e.g., California Occupational Safety Health Administration (Cal/OSHA), Drivers Training, etc.] as required.

15.  Perform pre-trip inspection of passenger vehicles, trucks, small-wheeled tractors and other automotive equipment to maintain safe operation of vehicle utilizing policies/procedures, tools, codes, rules/regulation, etc. as required.

16.  Perform post-trip inspection of passenger vehicles, trucks, small-wheeled tractors and other automotive equipment to maintain safe operation of vehicle and safety of passengers utilizing policies, procedures, tools, codes, rules, regulation, etc. as required.

17.  Secure materials and supplies safely on/off passenger vehicles, trucks, small-wheeled tractors and other automotive equipment to ensure secure transport utilizing electronic power jacks, fork lift equipment, tie down straps, communication skills, etc. as required.

18.  Load materials and supplies safely on/off passenger vehicles, trucks, small-wheeled tractors and other automotive equipment to ensure secure transport utilizing electronic power jacks, fork lift equipment, tie down straps, communication skills, etc. as required.

19.  Unload materials and supplies safely on/off passenger vehicles, trucks, small-wheeled tractors and other automotive equipment to ensure secure transport utilizing electronic power jacks, fork lift equipment, tie down straps, communication skills, etc. as required.

20.  Supervise the work of helpers providing instruction and assisting with various tasks to ensure job completion and/or continuity of work process utilizing communication and organizational skills, leadership ability, policies/procedures, etc. as required.

21.  Instruct, lead, or supervise inmates/youthful offenders engaged in tasks associated with automotive equipment utilizing safety training, Departmental Operations Manual (DOM), in order to ensure compliance with institutional guidelines and program needs, on an ongoing basis.

22.  Maintain records and daily reports (e.g. inmate timesheets, daily work orders and time reports, tool control, vehicle log, etc.) to provide information for institutional use and assure compliance with stipulated laws, rules, regulations, policies and procedures, etc., utilizing resources DOM, institutional operational procedures, etc. on a daily basis.

23.  Maintain order and supervise the conduct of inmates/youthful offenders committed to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) to produce a safe and productive shop utilizing Departmental Operations Manual (DOM) and departmental policies and procedures on a daily basis.

24.  Prevent the escape and injury of persons committed to CDCR to themselves or others or to property in accordance with DOM, departmental policies and procedures on a daily basis.

25.  Maintain security of working areas and work materials ensuring keys are in designated and secure locations for the safety and security of the institution utilizing computer or print out of key rosters, effective communication skills in accordance with DOM, departmental policies/procedures on a daily basis.

26.  Inspect premises to ensure the work environment is free from contraband (e.g., weapons, drugs, and tobacco, etc.,) utilizing mirrors, protective gloves, training resources, Departmental safety standards, DOM, etc., as required.

27.  Instruct others in understanding and following oral/written instructions [Code of Safe Practices, Injury and Illness Prevention Program (IIPP), Safety Data Sheets (SDS), Repair Manuals, etc.) sufficient to carry out repair orders and shop procedures by demonstrating the proper repair methods and answer questions

28.  Communicate in a professional manner with the co-workers, supervisors/managers, inmates or youthful offenders to deal with confidential issues utilizing tact, interpersonal skills, etc. and establish and maintain effective working relationships with others as needed.

29.  Addresses stressful situations (e.g. inmates, work relationships, heavy workloads, meeting deadlines, etc.) in the workplace in a professional and tactful manner, with a goal of avoiding further escalation by utilizing effective interpersonal skills, training, etc. in accordance with DOM on a daily basis.

30.  Coordinate and work with other trades to ensure automotive equipment is safe and in proper operating condition for material and supply transport utilizing manufacturer specifications, guidelines, policies and procedures under the direction of the DGS/OFA, DOM, SAM, state vehicle code, etc. as require.

31.  Respond to emergency call backs (e.g., power outage, cell door/gate malfunctions, electrical fires, etc.) in order to ensure the safety and security of the institution by utilizing and maintaining a land line phone or cell phone, etc., as required.

Knowledge of:

K1.  Comprehensive knowledge of operating varied automotive equipment (passenger vehicles, trucks, small-wheeled tractors, and other motor equipment) to effectively perform assigned duties.

K2.  Basic knowledge of tools and materials used to perform minor automotive maintenance and/or repair work on various kinds of automotive equipment.
