Task Statements:

1.  Assist in establishing uniformity and continuity of custody and security to ensure the safety of the facility, using Departmental policies/procedures, under the direction of the Watch Commander.

2.  Assist in maintaining uniformity and continuity of custody and security to ensure the safety of the facility, using Departmental policies/procedures, under the direction of the Watch Commander.

3.  Assign work to staff to ensure successful operation of the facility, using radios, phones, verbal instructions, etc., on a daily basis.

4.  Conduct meetings with staff to ensure Departmental policies/procedures are disseminated, using daily operations reports, Sergeant’s communication log, etc., on a daily basis.

5.  Review reports (e.g. use of force, behavior, daily operations) to determine information is substantiated using Departmental policies/procedures, as needed.

6.  Make recommendations to administration to ensure successful operation of the facility, using Departmental policies/procedures, as needed.

7.  Transmit information and administrative directives to staff to ensure compliance with Departmental policies/procedures, using memos, log books, emails, etc., on an ongoing basis.

8.  Communicate observations and impressions of youthful offender behavior to appropriate staff to ensure the facility’s safety and security, using radios, phones, verbal instructions, etc., on an ongoing basis.

9.  Train staff in security procedures to remain in compliance with laws, rules and regulations, using training methods (e.g., In-Service-Training, on-the-job training, computer based training), on an ongoing basis.

10.  Assure the security, safety, and order of the facility to protect staff, youthful offenders and the public, using existing Departmental policies/procedures, on an ongoing basis.

11.  Ensure that staff take appropriate corrective action to hold youthful offenders accountable, using training, Disciplinary Decision Making System, Positive Check System, as needed.

12.  Control issuance of keys, radios, personal alarms, and other security equipment to ensure that all sensitive equipment is accounted for, using policies/procedures, on an ongoing basis.

13.  Monitor the security communications systems (e.g. personal alarm, security sound, two-way radio, intercom, telephone) to ensure the safe operation of the facility, using the facilities operations manual, on an ongoing basis.

14.  Supervise staff to ensure the safety and security of the facility, using existing policies/procedures, as needed.

15.  Notify the Watch Commander of emergency situations to initiate notification protocol, using telephone, e-mail, two-way radio, as needed.

16.  Reconcile facility counts to ensure accountability of all youthful offenders, using established policies/procedures (e.g., count boards, computer database), on a daily basis.

17.  Maintain appropriate log books to ensure information is properly documented and recorded, using computer databases, on a daily basis.

18.  Review documentation of new commitments and referrals into the facilities to ensure accurate data is entered, using computer databases, as needed.

19.  Oversee new commitments and referrals into the facilities to ensure compliance, using intake policies/procedures, as needed.

20.  Fingerprint new commitments to link relevant records of arrest and prosecution, using Live Scan machine, computer systems, etc., as needed.

21.  Prepare the intake process of new commitments assigned to the facility to ensure youthful offenders are successfully integrated using Departmental policies/procedures, computer systems, Live Scan, etc., as required.

22.  Make recommendations related to plans and policies/procedures, within the work unit to facilitate improvements/updates, using written/verbal requests, as needed.

23.  Evaluate work of subordinate employees to ensure job performance is up to department standards, using procedural standards (e.g., performance evaluations, staff personnel files, on-the-job training), on an ongoing basis.

24.  Write performance reports on subordinate employees job performance to provide feedback and encourage high quality performance using the Behavior Anchor Rating System, as required.

25.  Initiate appropriate disciplinary or other corrective action when necessary to ensure the undesirable behavior does not continue, using the Progressive Discipline System, as needed.

27.  Operate electronic word and data processing systems for information input and retrieval to complete assignments, using computers, on a daily basis.

29.  Arrange for transportation and meals while en route to comply with mandates, using the Transportation Manual and Departmental policies, on an ongoing basis.

30.  Maintain security, supervision, and discipline of all youthful offenders in custody to ensure public safety, using the Disciplinary Decision Making System and Departmental policy, on an ongoing basis.

31.  Carry a firearm to ensure the safety of the public, staff, and youthful offenders, using Departmental policies/procedures, as needed.

32.  Prepare transportation schedules for the movement of youthful offenders to ensure sufficient coverage, using the Department’s Transportation Manual, on a daily basis.

33.  Train transportation staff to ensure compliance with Departmental policy, using various training methods (e.g., gun range, defensive driving, on-the-job training), as needed.

34.  Coordinate schedules for line staff to ensure adequate coverage, using the Workforce Telestaff Database System, on a continuous basis.

35.  Train new employees in academy curriculum (e.g. Departmental policy/procedures) to meet Correctional Peace Officers Standards and Training Mandates using the Institutions and Camps Manual, as required.

36.  Oversee the conduct of new employees assigned to the training academy to ensure compliance with the Department’s Code of Conduct using Departmental policy/procedures, as required.
