Task Statements:

1.  Assessment and management of mental disorders including examining, diagnosing, classifying, prescribing treatment and rehabilitation programs for patients in institutional, parole and juvenile justice settings to ensure compliance with appropriate standards of care as specified in various laws, rules, regulations, court mandates (e.g., Division of Correctional Health Care Services/Division of Juvenile Justice policies and procedures), on a continuous basis under the direction of the Chief of Mental Health.

2.  Administers psychiatric care for patients in institutional, parole and juvenile justice settings in collaboration with a multi-disciplinary treatment team to maximum level-of-functioning and stabilization/remission of symptoms to ensure compliance with appropriate standards of care as specified in various laws, rules, regulations, court mandates (e.g., Division of Correctional Health Care Services/Division of Juvenile Justice policies and procedures) under the direction of the Team Leader.

3.  Perform clinical rounds consistent with on call duties and acute/sub-acute patient care management to ensure compliance with appropriate standards of care as specified in various laws, rules, regulations, court mandates (e.g., Division of Correctional Health Care Services/Division of Juvenile Justice policies and procedures) under the direction of the Chief of Mental Health.

4.  Consults, when clinically indicated, with peers and/or supervisors on unusual, complex, or serious cases or presents such cases to a clinical conference for advice or decision regarding treatment strategies to ensure compliance with appropriate standards of care as specified in various laws, rules, regulations, court mandates (e.g., Division of Correctional Health Care Services/Division of Juvenile Justice policies and procedures) under the direction of the Team Leader.

5.  Provides instruction and supervision to residents, personnel or other health care providers assigned for special training and education in correctional mental health care to ensure compliance with appropriate standards of care as specified in various laws, rules, regulations, court mandates (e.g., Division of Correctional Health Care Services/Division of Juvenile Justice policies and procedures), on a continuous basis under the direction of the Chief of Mental Health.

6.  Participates in staff meetings, mental health program committees, and workgroups, (and other committees and workgroups as assigned) to provide subject matter expertise and ensure proper implementation of the standards of mental health care under the direction of the Chief of Mental Health.

7.  Ensures proper (legible, dated, and timed per Departmental Operations Manual) and sufficient clinical documentation is recorded in the psychiatric/medical records (e.g. paper and electronic) utilizing a variety of resources (e.g. communication skills, computer equipment, etc.) to ensure continuity of care and adequate risk management under the direction of the Chief of Mental Health.

8.  Provides and receives information relative to mental health care (written and/or verbal) to or from inmate/ward-authorized parties to establish, inform and maintain cooperative relationships utilizing various resources (e.g. interpersonal/communication skills, knowledge, etc.) in the presence of supervisory or management staff and under the direction of Chief of Mental Health.

9.  As with all employees, maintains order of persons committed to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation to ensure the security of working areas/materials, to prevent escape and injury by these persons to themselves and/or others, and to safeguard property utilizing various resources (e.g. interpersonal skills, heightened awareness of the surroundings, knowledge, various alarm systems, etc.) as dictated by departmental policy and under the direction of the Warden/Superintendent or designee.

Knowledge of:

K1.  Thorough knowledge of the principles and methods of psychiatry as it applies to the diagnosis and/or treatment of mentally, emotionally and developmentally disordered patients.

K2.  General knowledge of modern methods and principles of medicine and neurology and their applicability to clinical problems encountered in practice.

K3.  Current knowledge of literature and recent developments in the field of psychiatry in order to maintain good standards of care in keeping with practice.

K6.  Basic knowledge of the principles, methods and objectives of training treatment personnel as it applies to the management and care of mentally disordered patients.
