Task Statements:

1. Supervise employees and persons committed to the California Department of Corrections & Rehabilitation (CDCR) engaged in horticulture (e.g., planting, cultivating, etc.) and caring for trees, shrubs, hedges, flowers, lawns, and various ground covers to ensure compliance,  state and institutional policies/procedures, duty statements and verbal/written communication, on an ongoing basis.

2. Supervise the use and maintenance of gardening tools and equipment to maintain the safety/security of the institution, using Departmental policies/procedures, tool control, inspections and inventory, on an ongoing basis.

3. Direct employees and persons committed to CDCR in their work to maintain the safety/security of the institution, using Departmental policies/procedures, verbal/written communication and personal experience, on an ongoing basis.

4. Instruct employees and persons committed to CDCR in their work to maintain the safety/security of the institution, using Departmental policies/procedures, verbal/written communication and personal experience, on an ongoing basis.

5. Take appropriate action with employees and persons committed to CDCR in their work to ensure duties are safely and properly completed, using Departmental policies/procedures, verbal/written communication and inspections, as required.

7. Design minor landscape work (e.g., irrigation systems, plants, lawns, etc.), to maintain grounds per Design Criteria Guidelines, as needed.

9. Supervise the operation and maintenance of greenhouses and other buildings used for plant propagation (e.g., seedlings, transplanting, grafting, etc.), to enhance the appearance of the facility, using visual inspections and Departmental guidelines, on an ongoing basis.

10. Supervise pest and noxious weed control work to prevent ground erosion per Department of Fish and Wildlife regulations, as mandated.

11. Supervise tree trimming and minor tree surgery to maintain the safety and security of the facility, using Departmental policies/procedures, on an ongoing basis.

12. Identify shrubs, trees, and flowers for instruction purposes when executing landscape designs, using reference materials and visual inspections, as needed.

13. Label shrubs, trees, and flowers for instruction purposes when executing landscape designs, using blue prints and reference materials, as needed.

14. Perform minor layout work on roads and walkways to provide safe accessibility on institutional grounds, using design criteria and building codes/regulations, as needed.

15. Direct the maintenance and repair of roads and walkways to maintain safe accessibility on institutional grounds, using design criteria and building codes/regulations, as needed.

16. Direct the preparation of athletic fields for various sports and athletic events to ensure continued use, using work orders and preventative maintenance, as needed.

17. Maintain the proper drainage system for grounds or roadside plantings to prevent erosion and insect infestation, using design criteria and equipment (e.g., bobcat, backhoe, pumps, etc.), as needed.

18. Make minor repairs and adjustments to sprinkling systems to maintain proper working conditions, using sprinkler heads, valves, controllers, etc., as needed.

19. Maintain time and cost records to assist in budgeting, using work orders and preventative maintenance, as required.

20. Assist in the preparation of the grounds maintenance budget to obtain funding, using research skills and past reports, annually.

21. Inspect contract landscaping work for compliance with contract specifications to meet state and local regulations/codes, using blue prints and visual inspections, as needed.

22. Maintain order of persons committed to CDCR to ensure safety and security, using Departmental policies/procedures, on an ongoing basis.

23. Supervise the conduct of persons committed to CDCR to ensure safety and security, using Departmental policies/procedures, on an ongoing basis.

24. Prevent escapes and injuries by persons committed to CDCR or others to maintain the safety and security of the institution and public, using Departmental policies/procedures, on an ongoing basis.

25. Maintain security of working areas and work materials to ensure a safe working environment, using Departmental policies/procedures, on an ongoing basis.

26. Inspect premises and conduct searches of persons committed to CDCR for contraband, such as weapons or illegal drugs to ensure safety/security, using Departmental policies/procedures, as required.

27. Review reports (e.g., timecards, daily logs, inspections, etc.), to ensure accuracy and accountability, using Departmental policies/procedures, as needed.

29. Conduct training (e.g., safety, on-the-job, In-Service, etc.), to adhere to Departmental policies/procedures, as mandated.

31. Obtain cost estimates for equipment, materials, and supplies to submit for approval, using procurement processes, as needed.

K1. Comprehensive knowledge of modern methods of propagating, planting, cultivating, and caring for trees, shrubs, flowers, and lawns and skill in their use to ensure tasks are being properly completed.
