JOB ANALYSIS: LABORATORY TECHNICIAN (CHEMICAL ANALYSIS)

Task Statements:

1. Perform routine quantitative and qualitative analysis of water, waste water, and bio-solids, etc. to generate accurate and defensible data utilizing established laboratory test procedures, in accordance with Governmental rules and regulations.

2. Prepare samples, equipment, and materials for analysis to ensure accurate, consistent, and defensible test results using appropriate physical preparation and clean-up, in accordance with Governmental rules and regulations.

3. Analyze in-house sample for analysis utilizing standard operating procedure, lab equipment, and log sheets, in accordance with Governmental rules and regulations.

4. Perform work assignments to complete chemical, biochemical, and microbiological analyses utilizing Standards Operating Procedures (SOPs) and training material, in accordance with Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Program (ELAP) and Governmental rules and regulations.

5. Communicate effectively with the Chemist and Water and Sewage Plant Supervisor, Correctional Facility to provide the status of sample analyses and ensure the consistent flow of information utilizing lab log sheets, email, team meetings, etc., in accordance with Governmental rules and regulations.

6. Maintain incubator, refrigerator, and freezer temperature logs to ensure accurate, consistent, and defensible test results utilizing the laboratory’s standard operating procedures, in accordance with Governmental rules and regulations.

7. Prepare standard reagent, chemical solutions, and microbiological broth to perform required analyses utilizing the laboratory’s standard operating procedures, in accordance with Governmental rules and regulations.

8. Perform routine maintenance of lab equipment (i.e., autoclave, spectrophotometer, pH meter, turbidity meter, dissolved oxygen meter, etc.) to maintain proper operation utilizing replacement items (i.e., bulbs, gaskets,) and cleaning solutions, in accordance with Governmental rules and regulations.

9. Document analysis results and data in both written and electronic logs to provide a record of accurate and timely test results utilizing computers and log sheets, in accordance with Governmental rules and regulations. 

10. Clean glassware, laboratory equipment, and laboratory work areas to minimize sample contamination and maintain a safe work environment utilizing special laboratory soaps and disinfectants, in accordance with Governmental rules and regulations.

11. Keep accurate record of lot numbers and certificates of analysis of chemical reagents and supplies (e.g., glassware, bottles, containers, pipettes, etc.) for traceability and to meet audit criteria utilizing log sheets, spreadsheets, and files, in accordance with Governmental rules and regulations.

12. Archive data to ensure security and accessibility for audits utilizing files, computers, and software, in accordance with Governmental rules and regulations.

13. Maintain an inventory of all laboratory equipment with their manuals and records of maintenance to ensure credible analyses utilizing Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Program (ELAP) protocol, in accordance with Governmental rules and regulations.

14. Collect samples for submission to outside contracted laboratories utilizing chain of custody, sampling techniques, and required preservation, bottling, and labeling, in accordance with Governmental rules and regulations.

15. Prepare samples for submission to outside contracted laboratories utilizing sample handling techniques (i.e., ice, coolers, etc.), in accordance with Governmental rules and regulations.

16. Prepare documentation of sample collection to ensure proper handling and tracking utilizing the chain of custody form and labels, in accordance with Governmental rules and regulations.

17. Maintain toxic and hazardous materials to protect employee’s health and safety and the impact upon the environment utilizing Safety Data Sheets and laboratory standard operating procedures, in accordance with Governmental rules and regulations.

18. Disposal of toxic and hazardous materials to protect employee’s health and safety and the impact upon the environment utilizing Safety Data Sheets and laboratory standard operating procedures, in accordance with Governmental rules and regulations.

19. Collect in-house sample for analysis utilizing sampling techniques, standard operating procedure, and log sheets, in accordance with Governmental rules and regulations.

20. Disposal of samples to protect the environment and the public utilizing sample and retention protocols, autoclave, sinks, and containers, etc., in accordance with Governmental rules and regulations.

21. Maintain freezers, refrigerators, and incubators for proper operation by defrosting, cleaning, and monitoring set temperatures, in accordance with Governmental rules and regulations.

22. Maintain inventory of laboratory reagents and supplies to ensure in-house tests and analyses are completed by monitoring and recording stock items, in accordance with Governmental rules and regulations.

23. Monitor the calibration status of balances, traceable weights, pipettes, and dispensers to ensure accurate and consistent results by reviewing records and dated labels, in accordance with Governmental rules and regulations.

24. Perform verification of balances to ensure accurate and consistent results using traceable calibrated weights, in accordance with Governmental rules and regulations.

25. Prevent escapes of inmates to maintain the safety and security of the institution and the public utilizing visual contact, tool and key control, and institutional counts, in accordance with Governmental rules and regulations.
