The youth fire crew walked onto the field at CSU-Sacramento to be recognized for their efforts fighting fires in 2018. The small ceremony, held Jan. 26, 2019, was one part of the 45th annual Pig Bowl Guns and Hoses charity football game.

The event pits firefighters against law enforcement officers on the field, benefiting charitable organizations.

The youth fire crew also took part in a Kids Safety Fair.

The game honored the recent deaths of many officers killed in the line of duty. Organizers also recognized firefighters who risked their lives during the 2018 California wildfires.

Pine Grove staff included parole agents Jeff Cramer, Eric Taylor and Sandra Magdaleno, Youth Correctional Counselor Debby Brady, and CALFIRE Capt. Dirk Widman.

Youth fire crew members thanked for their efforts were Osvaldo Cardenas, Mathew Cisneros, Gerardo Flores, Terrence Hamilton, Jesus Hernandez, Moses Perez-Herrera, Jason Simmons, Anthony Tieu, Daniel Vasquez-Moreno and Zachary Roussel.

Pine Grove participants enjoy watching the Pig Bowl Guns and Hoses charity football game.

“It was really special to be treated like a regular member of the firefighting community,” said Hernandez. “(We were being) not judged on our past mistakes as teenagers but for our contributions as young adults.”
