K‑9 Goose retires after bountiful CRC career

K-9 Goose retired from CRC in 2019 and passed away in 2015.

The California Rehabilitation Center (CRC) recently said goodbye to K-9 Goose who faithfully served the institution for nearly six years. She will remain with K-9 Officer L. Serrano and his family to live out the rest of her days.

Officer Serrano and Goose completed the K-9 Academy and were certified as a K-9 team Aug. 2, 2013. Once back at CRC, the K-9 team was tasked with the daily and random searches of the institution when not on assignment with the Southern Region K-9 Unit.

The intrepid pair were able to assist with multiple operations inside institutions, as well as in the community.

They were able to network and maintain open lines of communication with the Division of Adult Parole Operations, Office of Internal Affairs, Special Services Unit, Office of Correctional Safety, Fugitive Apprehension Team, California Parole Apprehension Team, Los Angeles Police Department, Riverside County Sheriff, San Bernardino County Sheriff, Federal Bureau of Prisons, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Drug Enforcement Administration, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives.

These open lines of communication allow the K-9 teams to assist in various searches and sweeps within the community.

During K-9 Goose’s time with the department, she was able to detect 190 cell phones, 18 grams of cocaine, 172.6 grams of heroin, 1,699.8 grams of marijuana, 151.4 grams of meth, and 46,190.1 grams of tobacco.

K-9 Goose will now be able to enjoy the rest of her time with her family until the end of her natural life. She officially retired March 1, 2019.

“Goose was a very effective team member and I hate to see her go,” said Warden Cynthia Y. Tampkins.
