
Retired Correctional Sgt. James “Jim” Harbison’s family reports he passed away Aug. 15, 2020. He began his career with the department in 1984 as a Correctional Officer at the California Men’s Colony in San Luis Obispo.
Harbison transferred to the California Institution for Men, where he promoted to Correctional Sergeant. He retired in May 1998.
He was the first of four generations of Correctional Peace Officers in the family. Those who followed in his footsteps include his daughter Correctional Counselor I (retired) Terry Cleland; son-in-law Correctional Lieutenant (retired) Jeff Cleland Sr.; granddaughter Correctional Officer Susan Cleland-Clemmons; grandson Special Agent Jeff Cleland Jr. and great grandson Correctional Officer Mitchel Cleland.
Harbison is survived by his wife Mary, two daughters Terry and Wanda, six grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
