Wasco State Prison‑Reception Center honors 30 years of service

WSP-RC staff could take a shot at dunking their supervisors, or even the warden.

Wasco State Prison-Reception Center (WSP-RC) celebrated 30 years of public service. The event featured a tri-tip cook-off, car show competition, and carnival.

Wasco prison, the state’s largest reception center, opened 30 years ago in 1991 (see republished story).

During the celebration, staff threw water balloons at their favorite supervisor or manager. Warden Heather Shirley was also a target in the “Soak a Boss Balloon Toss.”

All proceeds from the balloon toss benefited the Kern County Honor Flight program. It was the only activity asking for a donation.

WSP-RC second and third watch staff were treated to a tri-tip sandwich lunch while first watch staff were given breakfast burritos.

In attendance were Division of Adult Institutions Director Connie Gipson, Region III Health Care Executive Chris Podratz, and Patrice Davis, Assistant to the DAI Director. They also served as guest judges for the tri-tip competition.

This event was an opportunity to create memories celebrating a milestone in our institution’s history. It also presented a chance for the Warden and her management team to thank all WSP-RC staff for their hard work and dedication during difficult times.
