Avenal prison staff help families in need

Avenal prison staff hold fundraiser.
Avenal Prison's Chicano Correctional Workers Association held a bake sale to benefit families who are in need.

The staff at Avenal State Prison (ASP) helped raise money to help the families of Helen Sanchez and Elvira Longoria, as well as the daughter of a retiree.

Over the course of four separate fundraisers sponsored by the Avenal prison chapters of the Employee Action Committee, Chicano Correctional Workers Association, and Badge of Brothers, $15,527 was raised to help the families during their difficult times.

One of the fundraisers was to assist Julissa Mojarras with recent medical bills. Mojarras is the daughter of a retired Avenal Prison Correctional Officer.

Helen Sanchez was a loved member of the ASP family for over 30 years. Elvira Longoria was a previous employee who worked at ASP as a Licensed Vocational Nurse before transferring to Corcoran State Prison.
