Honoring the memory of Benny Alcala, CDCR volunteers laced-up their running shoes for the Baker-to-Vegas Challenge Cup Relay.

Hundreds of teams, comprised of current and retired law enforcement staff, travel from around the world to compete in the relay. The start line is in Baker, a small town in the Mojave Desert, with runners traversing 120 miles to the finish line in Las Vegas.

CDCR finished 44th overall out of 234 teams, receiving a mug in the 800 category.

Correctional Counselor III Alcala was tragically killed in an off-duty crime Aug. 24, 2022. Alcala’s widow and two children attended the race and were presented with a plaque and the team’s baton.

The CDCR team is always searching for competitive runners and support personnel. If interested in participating in the 2024 Baker-to-Vegas Challenge Cup Relay, contact the team captains Armando Lopez and Valerie Childress (email addresses found in Global).
