Michael “Mick” Mitchell, a retired correctional lieutenant, passed away May 22, 2023.
He began his career with the department as a cadet in February 1987. After graduating the Basic Correctional Officer Academy, he reported to Avenal State Prison. In 1995, he promoted to sergeant and then promoted to lieutenant in August 2002. He retired in July 2003.
“Mick will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Please join us in expressing our condolences to his family and friends during this difficult time,” according to a statement issued by Avenal State Prison.
