James Johnson, retired officer, passes away

James “JJ” Johnson

James “JJ” Johnson, a retired correctional officer, passed away June 18, 2023. He began his career with the department in May 1999 as a cadet at the Richard A. McGee Correctional Training Center. After graduating the Basic Correctional Officer Academy in July, Johnson reported to the Correctional Training Facility at Soledad.

He transferred to Folsom State Prison in June 2001, where he remained until retiring in May 2023.

Before joining CDCR, Johnson served in the US Navy.

Coworkers said Johnson’s positive attitude and kind heart touched many lives.

“James ‘JJ’ Johnson was an invaluable member of Folsom State Prison and will always be in our hearts. Whether it was a word of encouragement, a lending hand, or a friendly conversation, he always went above and beyond to ensure others felt valued and supported. Our sincerest condolences are extended to JJ’s family, friends, and loved ones,” according to a statement issued by the institution.

He is survived by his wife, son, daughter, and two stepsons. He also survived by his parents and brother. He was preceded in death by his brother Kenneth.
