K-9 officer receives American Legion Law Enforcement Award

Mark Martinez, an Investigative Services Unit K-9 Officer with High Desert State Prison (HDSP), was honored by the American Legion.

Each year, American Legion Post 204 in Susanville recognizes local law enforcement officers for their dedication to public safety. Martinez was honored as the American Legion Post 204 Correctional Officer of the Year for 2023.

The award allows the community to show their appreciation.

Officer Martinez was recommended for this award on behalf of HDSP Administration for his dedication to his job as well as completing a major investigation.

In addition to being a K-9 Officer, Martinez investigated how contraband was entering HDSP through the use of unmanned drones. Due to his investigation, large sums of cash, numerous firearms, and contraband were seized. This also led to the first drone pilot arrest. Another five people were arrested and indicted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

“It is with great honor to present this award to Mark for his dedication and efforts during the investigation,” said Warden Rob St. Andre during the Nov. 15 ceremony.
