Alarm response training includes Code III scenario

Custody, non-custody, and health care staff came together at California Institution for Men recently for reality-based alarm response training.

The realistic training is designed to be relevant to interactions employees experience at institutions.

Alarm response training instructors from multiple institutions shared their expertise. Instructors from other institutions joined those from California Institution for Men. Others included:

  • California Correctional Institution
  • California Institution for Women
  • California Rehabilitation Center
  • Wasco State Prison-Reception Center
  • Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility

The institution’s deactivated Facility D was used to simulate a large-scale riot with alarm activations from the main exercise yard and one housing unit.

This ultimately resulted in a Code III alarm response. This exercise allowed the experience to be as close to reality as possible, including encountering multiple incarcerated role players whose simulated injuries ranged from scrapes to multiple puncture wounds.

Acting Warden Travis Pennington and acting Chief Deputy Warden Eric Mejia showed their support during the exercise, as well.

“Being a former Rangemaster and Training for Trainers instructor in my earlier career, I honestly believe more staff training will help staff excel and improve on their day-to-day duties,” Pennington said.
