Calipatria State Prison recently hosted its second Junior Correctional Academy for staff and their kids.
Children of current employees attended the Junior Correctional Academy with their parent.
The children were exposed to some of the functions and trainings to which their parents have gone through. The academy provided a fun event, creating lasting memories for Calipatria prison employees and their children.
Calipatria Junior Academy starts the day off right
The children were greeted in the morning by recruiters who assisted them with registration, then they filled out an application and went through an interview process. Afterward, they reported to their squads and formed up to hear words of encouragement from acting Warden R. Arias.
“As it relates to staff wellness, it is difficult to identify anything more beneficial than creating an opportunity for staff to bond with their children,” said Arias.
The children were divided by age groups, with CDCR staff assigned as their Company Commanders. Once in groups, a child from each squad was selected to carry their company’s flag. They were then split in half, with one group reporting to the In-Service Training Department. Meanwhile, the other half began their Junior Correctional Academy Training.
Children began the day with basic policy and procedures training followed by photos. Then, they interacted with the Transportation Department and K-9 Unit.
Junior Cadets receive unique training
Health care staff taught a CPR class, kids practiced their new skill sets on training mannequins. The day had additional trainings and challenges, exposing the children to what their parents face each day. As the junior cadets maneuvered through their academy, there was plenty of laughter.
The day ended with a graduation as the cadets received a certificate of completion from the warden.
“It is important to empower the future by nurturing the potential within each young mind. For in the seeds of today, lies the forest of tomorrow,” said Correctional Sgt. Arturo Garcia.
