Ironwood State Prison staff, retirees, and guests recently celebrated 30 years since the opening of the institution.
Over the past three decades, prison staff, volunteers, and program providers have worked together, never losing sight of the ultimate goals of public safety and rehabilitation.
“We’ve confronted our share of tragedies and loss, but through the small-town spirit of Blythe, we’ve grown stronger and more cohesive. The success of Ironwood State Prison is the result of those who came before us, guiding and leading us into what we know now, and it is now our honor to continue to pass the torch to our future successors,” according to a statement issued by the institution.

Warden David Holbrook’s special guests included CDCR Secretary Jeff Macomber, retired Wardens Bert Rice and Neil McDowell, as well as Blythe Mayor Joey DeConinck. They were joined by several retired and current staff members.
Those who were part of the Ironwood activation team 30 years ago included Macomber, Rice and McDowell.
Currently active Ironwood State Prison pioneers in attendance were acknowledged by name during the ceremony. They were also individually thanked for all the hard work they’ve invested over the last 30 years.
To show appreciation, the California Correctional Peace Officers Association donated funds and provided a meal for all staff, active and retired. Retired staff remained on grounds after the ceremony, reminiscing with partners they hadn’t seen in years.
