Centinela State Prison recently hosted an Honor Guard change in command ceremony in front of dozens of staff and visitors.
Sgt. J. Valenzuela assumes command of the unit from Lt. I. Carranza, who recently retired after 24 years of CDCR service. Carranza commanded the ceremonial Honor Guard unit for over four years.
The Honor Guard comprises sworn peace officers from the department who maintain exceptionally high standards of appearance and show aptitude for ceremonial duty. The primary role of the unit is to provide funeral honors for fallen staff members in front of peers and family.
Warden F. Guzman, a veteran of the US Army National Guard, spoke about the importance of the unit, tasked with a difficult challenge during times of tragedy.
Having a military background, he said he understands the significance of the unit, which has 25 members.
Centinela State Prison hopes to continue expanding military traditions under Guzman, in hopes of maintaining high morale and acknowledge the employees who take on responsibilities that reach beyond the scope of their duties.
