Graduation marks generational milestone in corrections

Correctional Officer Yahsiia Fowler recently marked a momentous achievement by graduating from the CDCR Academy, continuing a distinguished family legacy in law enforcement. As the third generation of her family to enter the corrections field, Fowler’s graduation is a celebration of tradition and dedication to public safety. Following graduation, Fowler was assigned to California State Prison Solano (SOL) in Vacaville, a short distance from her mother’s workplace.

Inspiration and motivation

Yahsiia Fowler’s path to becoming a Correctional Officer was inspired by her desire to rehabilitate incarcerated individuals and prepare them for successful reintegration into society.

“My mother has exemplified what it means to be an honorable peace officer and has always been a source of encouragement,” Fowler shared. Her commitment was solidified during a memorable Bring Your Kid to Work Day.

Training and preparation

Fowler’s training experience at the CDCR Academy was marked by both rigorous challenges and rewarding moments.

“Firearm qualifications were a highlight, while chemical agents tested my resilience,” she reflected.

Fowler believes that essential qualities for success in corrections include strong communication, responsibility, and awareness.

Role models and aspirations

Fowler has long admired her mother.

Under the mentorship of her mother, Chief Deputy Warden (CDW) Sircoya M. Williams, at the California Medical Facility, Fowler has drawn inspiration from a remarkable role model.

“My mother’s achievements continue to motivate me,” Fowler said.

Looking ahead, Fowler aims to gain extensive experience at Solano and advance through the ranks, aspiring to eventually become a lieutenant.

This graduation is particularly significant for Fowler, who missed her high school graduation due to the pandemic.

“This ceremony is a chance to recreate that pivotal moment,” she explained.

Fowler’s future goals include enhancing institutional safety and maintaining high professional standards.

Chief Deputy Warden Williams’ reflections

CDW Sircoya M. Williams expressed immense pride as she pinned the badge on her daughter.

“Passing the torch to Yahsiia is both an honor and a profound moment,” Williams said. Reflecting on her career journey, Williams acknowledges the challenges and sacrifices that have shaped her and her daughter’s path.

Mentorship and legacy

Throughout Fowler’s training, CDW Williams provided unwavering support and guidance.

“Our conversations were crucial, and I continually encouraged her,” Williams said.

She emphasized the importance of hard work and discipline while supporting her daughter’s career aspirations.

Continuing a proud tradition

Correctional Officer Yahsiia Fowler’s graduation from the CDCR Academy highlights her personal achievements while also continuing a family legacy of service and dedication.

With the steadfast support of her mother and a new role at California State Prison, Solano, Fowler is ready to contribute meaningfully to the field of corrections, upholding a tradition of excellence and commitment to public safety.
