Dave Matthews, retired officer, passes

Dave Matthews, a retired correctional officer from California State Prison, Sacramento, passed away Aug. 5, 2024.

Matthews began his career with the department in April 1996 at the Richard A. McGee Correctional Training Center.

After graduating the Basic Correctional Officer Academy in May 1996, he reported to California State Prison, Sacramento.

After a long career with the department, he retired in October 2022.

“Officer Matthews was not only a dedicated employee but also a cherished mentor and reliable friend to many of those who worked around him. Officer Matthews was ethical, honorable, and highly principled. He was well respected by his peers and supervisors. His dedication to the well-being of all staff was unwavering, leaving an incredible mark on this institution and all that knew him,” according to the institution. “Officer Matthews loved and cherished his family and friends. He will be remembered for his professionalism and the fine representation he held within our department. He will be greatly missed. Our sincere condolences are extended to the Matthews family as well as our CDCR family during this difficult time.”
