Virtual reality helps reentry efforts at Valley

Creative Acts recently visited Valley State Prison (VSP) to bring virtual reality to the Youth Offender/Mentor Art Attack program.

The virtual reality curriculum was added to boost civic engagement and reentry support. The reentry program uses art and technology to aid transition into society and has shown a 96% decrease in infractions over a year.

Creative Acts uses art to address social justice, heal trauma, build community, and amplify incarcerated voices. The program links incarcerated youth with teaching artists and prominent figures through theater, poetry, visual arts, and music.

Formerly incarcerated teaching artists lead the program, offering immersive experiences for emotional regulation and problem-solving.

“Creative Acts has shown remarkable success in empowering our (incarcerated) youth and transforming their experiences. Their innovative approach aids in healing, personal growth, and positively impacts the overall environment,” said acting Chief Deputy Warden Bailey.

Incorporating virtual reality into the prison’s mentoring program, fosters behavioral change, improving reentry experiences.
