Ernest Smothers, retired officer, passes away

Ernest Smothers, a retired correctional officer from Ironwood State Prison, passed away June 28, 2024. He was 55 years old.

He began his career at the Basic Correctional Officer Academy in April 2000. After graduating, he reported to Ironwood in June 17.

Smothers remained at Ironwood for the duration of his career, retiring in May 2015.

“He will be deeply missed by everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him. Our sincerest condolences to his family and friends during this difficult time,” according to a statement issued by Ironwood.

He is survived by two brothers and four sisters. Services were held in his native state of Louisiana.
