Mark Loomis, a retired correctional officer, passed away Aug. 4, 2024, at 58 years old. He worked for the department at California Men’s Colony in San Luis Obispo from 1996 until he retired in 2023.

Loomis began his career with the department as a cadet in February 1996 at the Basic Correctional Officer Academy.
After graduating the academy, he reported for duty to California Men’s Colony in April. He remained at the institution his entire career, retiring in August 2023.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the entire Loomis family during this time of morning,” according to a statement issued by the institution.
“Mark was an avid surfer, a talented golfer and an accomplished visual artist. He was a loyal fan of the San Francisco Giants and enjoyed attending baseball games. He greatly enjoyed the natural beauty of California, especially the central coast beaches and Yosemite. Above all, he cherished time spent with his family and his many close friends,” according to a statement by the family.
He was engaged to be married and is survived by his son, mother, and five siblings.
A memorial celebration for family and friends will be held on Oct. 12 at 11 a.m., at the Loomis Family Barn, 8451 Huasna Road, Arroyo Grande.
