Wasco State Prison mourns passing of K‑9 Rye

Wasco State Prison-Reception Center is mourning the loss of K-9 Rye who passed away Aug. 28, 2024, after a tough battle with cancer.

K-9 Rye

K-9 Rye was born in April 2017 and began his career with CDCR in February 2018. Rye served CDCR and the prison with his handler Officer J. Martinez until his untimely passing.

“Rye was a loyal friend and partner credited for many narcotic and cell phone finds throughout his six-year career. Rye will be truly missed by all those who knew and worked with him throughout the years,” according to a statement issued by the prison.

According to Wasco State Prison-Reception Center, details regarding a memorial service for K-9 Rye are not yet available.
