Eugene Oliveira, retired correctional officer

Eugene “Gene” Oliveira, a retired correctional officer, passed away Sept. 10, 2024. He worked for the department for 17 years.

He began his career as a cadet at the Basic Correctional Officer Academy in November 1997. After graduating, Oliveira reported to Avenal State Prison in December 1997. He remained at Avenal until retired in August 2013.

“Gene will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Avenal State Prison staff had nothing but positive things to say about Gene. He was a proud Vietnam veteran, family man, and avid golfer. Gene was playing, and beating, his friends in golf until he fell ill in August,” according to a statement issued by Avenal.

Oliveira was Purple Heart and Bronze Star recipient

He rose to the rank of first lieutenant in the U.S. Army. While serving in Vietnam, his vehicle came under heavy fire. He was shot and also suffered severe wounds from shrapnel. For his service and actions, he was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star in addition to other commendations.

“In the early years after being medically discharged from the Army, Gene attended law school while also working for Kings County Truck Lines. Gene then farmed with (the family) for many years until, at the age of 50, decided to go back into service and became a correctional officer at Avenal State Prison,” according to his family. “It was no easy feat to complete the academy at 50, but he made it and built a very successful career as a correctional officer, retiring after 17 years.”

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Linda, their two children, and grandchildren.

A rosary will be held at 6 p.m., Sept. 19, at St. Brigid Catholic Church, 1001 N. Douty St., Hanford. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Sept. 20, at the church. Burial will immediately follow at Calvary Cemetery, 11680 S. 10th Ave., Hanford.
