After three decades in education, Kenneth Spencer II is retiring as Supervisor of Correctional Education Programs at Folsom State Prison. He’s overseen the programs at Greystone Adult School inside Folsom since 2017.
His education career began in 1989 as a teacher in Alameda County. It’s also where he discovered his passion for transformative learning experiences.
His transition from traditional high school to correctional education took root during at the Alameda County Juvenile Hall Center.
Spencer then joined CDCR at Mule Creek State Prison in 2008. From there, his career journey led him to pivotal roles at the Office of Correctional Education in Sacramento and later to California State Prison, Sacramento. However, his ultimate professional aspiration was realized in 2017 when he became the Supervisor of Correctional Education Programs at Folsom.
During his time at Folsom, Spencer made an indelible impact on his colleagues and the incarcerated population. His leadership, dedication, and unwavering commitment to correctional education have positively influenced countless individuals, leaving a legacy of empowerment and growth.
“After more than three decades of service to education, Spencer retires with the respect and admiration of all who have had the privilege to work alongside him,” according to the institution. “His contributions to correctional education have been nothing short of life-changing, and his influence will undoubtedly endure for years to come.”
