California State Prison, Corcoran, held its second graduation ceremony for the Occupational Mentor Certification Program (OMCP) Jan. 16.
The graduates shared stories of personal growth and positive changes with their instructors, family, and custody staff.
OMCP is a mentorship program which allows these individuals to receive intensive education with regards to self-help components such as integrated substance use disorder treatment (ISUDT), skill-building courses, and classroom education on alcohol and other drugs (AOD).
According to organizers, the graduates showed determination to complete the program.
“They have taken responsibility for their past actions but have also shown too that is there is an opportunity to redeem those past actions,” organizers said. “(This is) an opportunity to transform themselves and in the process transforming lives around them. These individuals are now equipped with the tools to be positive influences in their communities and within society.”
The OMCP graduates were able invite their family to share this special moment and enjoy a celebratory meal.
