CSP‑Solano hosts first intramural flag football game

California State Prison (CSP) Solano held the first intramural flag football game with Level II and Level III squaring off for bragging rights Feb. 8.

While it was a warm sunny day, the field was muddy but both teams were excited to play.

The game started off with an interception returned for a touchdown by the level III side. The level II quarterback redeemed himself with a kickoff return for a touchdown. The game was now tied, but not for long.

The level III team controlled the rest of the half, climbing 20-12 at halftime.

Both teams played tough defense in the second half. However, in the fourth quarter, the level II team was able to tie the game at 20-20. With less than two minutes on the clock, the level II side made a goal-line stop to get the ball back. Remaining time on the clock was now 1 minute and 20 seconds.

On the third play of the drive, the level II quarterback threw a costly interception, returning the ball to the other team. With 3 seconds left in the game, and the ball at the 40, the level III side called a timeout. At this point, everyone on the yard was expecting the game to go into overtime.

Final push to victory

The level III team was in a dire situation. With only a two-man rush, the level III quarterback threw a deep pass to his wide receiver in the end zone. The wide receiver made an amazing one-handed catch in the end zone, clinching a level III win.

The crowd and the level III bench erupted with the team hoisting the receiver onto their shoulders to celebrate the victory.

“The first ever cross-level intramural flag football game was a great success as the men showed great sportsmanship and respect for the game and the competition,” said organizers. “The spectators were engaged in every moment of the game and cheered their fellow incarcerated persons. Everyone is hopeful these cross-level games will continue.”
