Ernie Shimizu honors fallen, one step at a time

Ernie Shimizu runs on a paved path. Over the photo is this quote: “Grieving begins with one step and it’s important they know they’re not walking that road alone.”

Ernie Shimizu honors fallen service members and first responders through marathons, music, and meaningful volunteerism. A respected attorney, seasoned opera singer, and dedicated marathon runner, Shimizu has made it his mission to honor the memory of those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

By day, Shimizu works for California Correctional Health Care Services. But beyond his legal career, he leads a deeply personal initiative: Flags for the Fallen, a nonprofit project he runs through Facebook. (Visit his organization’s Facebook page to learn more.)

Through this initiative, Shimizu honors fallen veterans, law enforcement officers, and first responders by hand-delivering folded American flags. Each one is accompanied by a heartfelt, handwritten note to grieving families.

“Grieving begins with one step and it’s important they know they’re not walking that road alone.”

Ernie Shimizu

Shimizu often runs marathons in tribute, dedicating each mile to a fallen hero. With every flag he folds and every step he runs, he carries the weight of remembrance with grace and purpose.

For over 20 years, he’s also shared his gift of music with the world—performing opera alongside legends like Andrea Bocelli. He’s also captivated audiences with the Sacramento Philharmonic. Fluent in multiple languages, Shimizu brings the same passion to the stage as he does to his volunteer work.

April is National Volunteer Month—a time to spotlight those who give back. For Ernie Shimizu, service isn’t just a cause. It’s who he is.

Whether in the courtroom, on the stage, or honoring the fallen with silent strength, Shimizu honors fallen heroes in a way that inspires us all.
