The annual Employee Appreciation Day at Pelican Bay State Prison (PBSP) in Crescent City brought staff together for camaraderie, competition and community support.
The event was a way to thank the dedicated correctional officers, administrative staff, medical professionals and support teams. According to organizers, they are responsible for keep the facility running safely and efficiently every day.
A highlight of the afternoon’s activities featured various games that brought out the competitive spirit across all departments. These activities provided the perfect outlet for the team to relax and share a laugh. It also allowed them to engage in good-natured rivalry outside of their demanding daily routines.
Adding a unique twist to the day’s events, staff also participated in a comical walk-the-line event. Staff used specialized “drunk goggles” generously loaned to PBSP by the California Highway Patrol (CHP). The competition offered a fun, interactive way for staff to let loose. It also emphasized the strong partnership between PBSP and other law enforcement agencies like CHP.

In addition to the games, this year’s event featured a well-attended employee car show in the facility parking area. Staff proudly rolled out their personal vehicles, ranging from meticulously restored classic muscle cars and vintage trucks to custom bikes. Attendees spent time walking the rows, discussing restoration projects and voting on their favorite vehicles. These vehicles demonstrate the diverse talents and hobbies of PBSP staff.

The spirit of appreciation was further amplified by a massive gift giveaway, made possible thanks to the generous donations from local community businesses and residents. The giveaway ensured numerous staff walked away with incredible prizes, including gift certificates to local restaurants, high-quality outdoor gear and custom gift baskets packed with local goods.
This overwhelming support from the surrounding community reminds staff their hard work is recognized and valued by the citizens we serve.
Events like Employee Appreciation Day provide a break from the routine while reinforcing staff’s strong bond and family dynamic.
