Bayside Church honors Folsom staff with appreciation barbecue

Folsom State Prison (FSP) staff were recently treated to a day of appreciation as volunteers from Bayside Church returned to the institution for their annual staff appreciation barbecue, recognizing employees for their dedication and service.

The tradition began in 2018 after a correctional officer who attended Bayside Church pointed out that while many community organizations support programs for incarcerated individuals, few events were dedicated to recognizing the staff who work at the institution.

“I was told by the staff member, ‘nobody ever does anything for the staff here,” recalled Shaun Sanassarian, Bayside campus pastor for FSP. “So, I said let’s change that. So that year, 2018, we started the first barbecue to give back to the staff here.”

Since then, the annual event has become an opportunity for church volunteers to prepare meals, connect with employees and express gratitude for the work they do each day.

For staff, the gesture serves as a reminder that their efforts are recognized beyond the institution’s walls.

“It just reminds us that there are people out there that care about what we’re doing,” said Correctional Officer II Ryan Stambuk. “It is very nice to feel appreciated and feel like we’re getting taken care of.”

The event also highlights the longstanding relationship between Bayside Church and Folsom State Prison. Church volunteers have supported programs within the institution for years, building connections with both staff and the incarcerated population.

“Often we go from one thing to another without taking the time to say thank you,” said FSP Acting Warden Rosalinda Rosalez. “It’s important to set aside days where literally, that’s all we do is break bread together, have some small talk, look at each other in the eye, and say thank you for what you do.”

For Bayside Church, the goal extends beyond providing a meal. Volunteers hope the annual tradition continues to strengthen relationships and inspire similar appreciation efforts at other institutions. “We get to come out, let the staff know that they’re valued, they’re appreciated, they’re loved, they’re cared about,” Sanassarian said.

Through food, fellowship and community support, the annual barbecue continues to recognize the contributions of FSP employees while strengthening the partnership between the institution and its surrounding community.
